The PR firm should have suggested producing a compelling video (or something else) that advances your goals and has the oomph to go viral to your target audiences. 2. The PR firm should have put together a plan for disseminat ing the video that would have included: * reaching out to your friends and influencer s who can help spread it via social media, and perhaps in other ways as well, to your target audiences * traditiona l media initiative s (tradition al media loves to write about digial media marketing) * suggesting you write about the video on huffington post.com, as you have done, as well as elsewhere * tracking and measuring the result It goes without saying they did a bad job of posting it themselves . I hope the above is helpful! All best, Florence florenceq: Hi Grant: Having just come off of executing the PR http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/florenceq/do-pr-firms-makes-sense-a_b_480547_41585820.html | | This comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. You’re not being communicat ive with you needs, goals, expectatio ns, definition of success, back story, etc. No even the best firm in the world can read your mind. 2. You talk about hiring a “PR firm” but then speak only about the media relations work they did. PR is so, so, so much more that media relations. A solid agency (like mine, TrendyMind s) educates their clients on what all PR entails. (I’m not revealing our strategies here….) Look, traditiona l media is dying. A 5 year old knows this. The opportunit ies to get your name in print are dwindling. But to be honest, that doesn’t even matter so much. So what if you get a front page placement in the NY Times? Did you land a customer out of it? We look at media relations as just one tiny tool in the PR tool belt. Would you build a house with just a hammer? Hell no. Clearly the agencies you went with were either a) outdated, b) clueless or c) were “yes” people and did what you asked them to without giving you real solutions. Fail all around. TrendyMind s is a full service agency, and we have so many other service lines besides PR. We get that media relations in and of itself isn’t worth that much anymore, so we strategize other ways to place our clients in front of the people that matter — and sometimes that ISN’T the general public. –Elizabet h Friedland @efriedlan d Efriedland: There are probably 2 issues here: 1. It seems to be the only facet of marketing where the expectatio n borders on lunacy. PR is only as effective as the company or individual it represents . If you have to be told to integrate “strategy” into your business or marketing plan than you are not ready to incorporat e any facet of PR. PR appears to be less than effective in today’s multi-medi a society because it can no longer put lipstick on a pig effectivel y. PR has not been exposed, the clients it represents have been exposed within a communicat ions environmen t that can smell a fraud a mile away. My advice to you after hiring and firing three PR agencies, would be to stop pursuing PR altogether and take a long, hard look at yourself, your business and come up with a successful business plan first and the communicat ions end of it will take care of itself with minimal effort. A truly solid business offer with a tangible benefit really, truly does self itself. It’s a relationsh ip, and like dating, it usually takes a while to find the correct fit. You need to ask yourself what you’re looking for in a PR firm: counsel, function, creativity , relationsh ips. Also, is your story and audience(s ) defined? Do you know enough about PR to ask the appropriat e questions related to the actual storytelli ng, and does your prospectiv e agency know enough about your expectatio ns to deliver a dashboard of metrics to monitor? Further, does the agency understand your criteria for success (do you?)? Does your agency understand the timing, resources and finances you wish to attach to each phase or deliverabl e? Have you even delineated the deliverabl es and establishe d a framework for success? Have you and your agency establishe d a goal, objectives , strategy, tactics, and contingenc y for go/no go – success/fa ilure scenarios? Yes, you need a PR firm to tell your story. You also need a PR firm that will treat your objectives and expectatio ns in the same way as an accounting , mgmt. consulting or any other profession al service firm will. Good post, great comments. All the best, rv Robbie_Vorhaus: Hi, Grant… A PR firm is only as good as http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/Robbie_Vorhaus/do-pr-firms-makes-sense-a_b_480547_41390649.html | | This comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. The emergence of social media is one more tool. Because it is available does not mean that all who use it are effective communicat ors. PR is not something that people “do”. Public Relations involves partnering with clients. It sounds like you spelled out your expectatio ns to the firms you hired, but what sorts of case studies did each agency present when you met with them? How did you deal with lessons learned each time you fired one and hired the next? How did the prospectiv e agencies respond to informatio n you shared about your prior experience with the under-perf orming firms? As the president of the Colorado Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, I’d be remiss not to mention PRSA as a resource for someone looking for an agency or independen t consultant . By virtue of belonging to the organizati on, PRSA members are committed to polishing their skills and learning about the latest tools to produce excellent work . Is there room for improvemen t? Always. But if we are good at what we do, our work will remain relevant, and we will continue to be gainfully employed. Perhaps it’s the media they’ve been aiming at – maybe you should be aiming at online media rather than old media since with new media it’s considerab ly easier to get down to the niches who will be interested in your message. For our clients, when we do our monthly outreaches to bloggers, we regularly get between 100 and 300 posts written, and hundreds of tweets. For a simple video promotion, 50,000+ views is not unusual. Our webinars always get hundreds of participan ts… With you, and your offering, and the people who should naturally have an interest in your informatio n, there’s really no reason you shouldn’t be getting good levels of coverage. Feel free to ping me if you like, I’ll be more than happy to give you some guidance – it’s not rocket science at all. Self-publi shed how-to books are a dime a dozen–esp ecially the ones that are marketed the way you’re trying to sell yours. As a potential buyer/inte rested journalist , I visited your book’s site and your credibilit y immediatel y dropped. That’s not to say you aren’t a sales guru…but it’s a little fishy when I visit your site, and you don’t appear to know how to sell yourself through marketing. Yes, spots on CNN and FoxNews help, but 24/7 news outlets are constantly hard-up for “experts,” and smart consumers know that. You can’t lean on PR if you want to establish credibilit y; a good businessma n knows that you have to put all the pieces together if you want to get somewhere. sherbdaddy: Grant — Looks like you’ve got a marketing problem, not http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/sherbdaddy/do-pr-firms-makes-sense-a_b_480547_41365693.html | | This comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. Your friend Ralph Paglia understand s public relations, which at its core is supposed to be about building relationsh ips and communicat ing with people. Because he had a relationsh ip with his audience he explained the video to them, and they responded. If your PR firm valued relationsh ips they would have done the same. In the end it’s sad because it doesn’t even matter what media they used, it has be done with a view towards fostering engagement . Slapping a random video on the internet with no intro, doesn’t cut it. Good public relations has a place, especially now that the media landscape is becoming so cluttered. Public relations practition ers needed to know what their clients want and guide them towards the best comms strategy which may mean less engagement with traditiona l media. As for the Pr Firms Sydney coming to you, it’s a thought, but some may find that invasive. Perhaps ask the PR agencies what they know about media (tradition al & new), if they seem to skew to far to either side, avoid them. They are into smoke and mirrors, not engagement . If they take to you about real measuremen t, and engagement ; listen. If they know your field/ market and can offer sound advice, you may have something there. if they “get you” pick them. YouCouldBelieve: I think you choose the wrong firms. First, it took too long to find these clips. They are in a section called “Web” but should be under the “Press” tab. A TV /radio booker, will click on the “Press” tab, not see any clips, tthen move on to the next guest. All the print interviews you mention under “Press” have no links. Back to the broadcast interviews , I could not figure out what your message was. You responded to Mr. Jackson’s questions but never took control of the interview to communicat e your expertise. As Carville advised Clinton to repeat over and over “It’s the economy stupid,” What is your message? You should include Michael Jackson in the clip descriptio n. He is well known but I didn’t know the interview was with him until I clicked the link. Finally, I recommend re-brandin g. If you want more major broadcast and print interviews , you need to consider the audience which is broad and not just sales people. Branding yourself on the website as a “Sales Expert” will not help you generate interviews . Your interviews focus on financial advise to the everyday investor so consider the title of “Financial Advisor.” Anyway, this is just from looking at your site, and a good PR consultant would have suggested these to you. Good luck! Susan Roth, Roth PR, Washington DC Susan_Roth: Grant, here is some PR advise. Social media gives PR the opportunit y to finally engage the public in a dialogue, a two-way communicat ion. It is basically putting the “public” back in public relations (like Brian Solis put it). Because those changes are so ground breaking, PR specialist s might have a hard time to adapt. They have to learn not to talk at people, but to people. Bigger PR agencies already employ digital and new media strategist s, smaller ones (like you probably worked with) will hopefully follow soon. Young profession als deal with social media on a daily level anyways, so it`s easier for them to use it in a strategic way. Being a public relations student, I can only speak for the future of PR: our curriculum is heavily focused on new media and the opportunit ies it provides for PR. Read some of my thoughts on social media and PR on my blog Marlena_Braeu: PR is certainly not ending with the rise of social http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/Marlena_Braeu/do-pr-firms-makes-sense-a_b_480547_41344172.html | | This comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. Three different Pr Firms Sydney over the course of a one year period failed by your estimation ? Perhaps a look in the mirror is necessary along with a course in what public relations can and cannot do. “If one person calls you a donkey, pay no attention. I think many larger firms get caught up in the status quo of what they’ve been doing for years and have neglected to remember (in my opinion), the core requiremen t of public relations or public communicat ion, which is that you must keep in mind your target audience. Where are they? Who are they reading? How do they prefer to be communicat ed to/reached ? Not only is this key for achieving goals of reach but I also think it plays a huge factor in placing stories/ob taining media mentions. “Tradition al” PR and new media are both valid, but vary depending on the topic/clie nt/etc. and a good firm needs to be able to recognize that and match the need appropriat ely. fleuredeflorida: I think you raise some valid points that relate to http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/fleuredeflorida/do-pr-firms-makes-sense-a_b_480547_41340678.html | | This comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. This is not a training video nor was it intended to motivate. It was created for a group of people that need a wake up call, people that are not doing their job! There is a hint as? to its final purpose in the video” Why are you trying to use a video designed for a specific target group for a specific reason to get yourself mass media attention? The media doesn’t make anyone famous anymore. The media simply writes about someone after he or she has already become famous through generating a following via social media. You have to show up with a built in audience to prove you are worthy of coverage. That means delivering the right message to the right people via the most effective channels more consistent ly than your competitio n. And, being famous can’t be your goal on social networks because people will see right through your motive.
